PDF/X Prepress & Print Rules: Ensuring Printing Accuracy
Commercial offset printing requires absolute visual predictability. Standard office PDFs often contain RGB colors, which look vibrant on a backlit LED monitor but print poorly on physical paper. PDF/X is the standard designed specifically for commercial print workflows.
PDF/X requires all colors to be defined in device-independent spaces or CMYK color formats. It mandates that all fonts must be fully embedded, preventing font substitution errors. Furthermore, it requires defining an Output Intent, which specifies the target printing condition.
PDF/X documents also contain predefined layout boundaries, including the MediaBox, TrimBox, and BleedBox, which instruct the printing machine where to trim the paper. Keeping these parameters clean avoids print mistakes and layout clipping.
